Behold, one of the most complex, well-written, incredibly acted dramas of the past few years. An intertwining story involving seven people...whose name happen to correspond to the colors of the rainbow (although I'm sure that's just a ridiculous coincidence), all under the song "Rainbow Connection" by The Carpenters (which I'm sure is just...oh who am I kidding, Japanese shows love cheesy references like this). And thus, I present:
Koi ga Shitai Koi ga Shitai Koi ga Shitai
Watabe Atsuro as Akai Ryosuke
Mizuno Miki as Haneda Ai
Kanno Miho as Nagashima Mikan
Oikawa Mitsuhiro as Shimura Ichiro
Tokoro George as Midorikawa Bunpei
Yamada Takayuki as Aoshima Wataru
Okae Kumiko as Kouda Orie
Wow. Just...wow. I have never seen a drama since this one that was as well-made, well-written, well-acted, well---well it's just that damn good!
Watabe Atsuro plays Akai Ryosuke (which automatically designates him as the Red Ranger). He's a man who, due to circumstances that have snowballed (and keep snowballing), has started to lose faith in his abilities to...well, everything, really. He tries to keep his chin up, but the stress is always there, no matter how subtle (which this actor is really good at, by the way). Interesting how the only other time I've ever seen this guy is as a yakuza zombie...
Mizuno Miki plays Haneda Ai, who does an incredible job of shaking up Akai's stagnant world (which tends to happen whenever a guy sees an incredibly hot woman sleeping on the steps of his apartment). She hides a dark, lonely secret (as described by J-Dorama Code of Cheery Female Character Conduct Article 9 Chapter VII). Her true character is
never that obvious from the get-go, but is constantly hinted at through the series. A well-written character.
Kanno Miho plays Nagashima Mikan, and damn, does she play her well. I don't even know why they bothered to give her lines...every last emotion is well acted out by her eyes and by her facial expression, and conveys her character's emotions more than any line of dialogue could. To be honest, nothing I can type out can even come close to giving justice to how amazing her acting is on this show...
Oikawa Mitsuhiro stars as Shimura Ichiro. Now, if the show had any shortfall, it's this guy. No, not the actor (who did an impressive job with what little he had) did anything wrong, but his character is paid so little attention to that his changes of heart feel rushed and unwarranted. To be honest, he's not paid that much attention to throughout the whole show, which is a shame, really...they could have done a better job with the "jackass turns to good guy" concept that Japan has mastered throughout the ages.
Tokoro George plays Midorikawa Bunpei, who runs the restaurant that acts as the hub for all these characters to (at times, randomly) interact with each other, with their words and actions affecting other storylines in some way, shape, or form. He also has a pretty well-written storyline that has his character interacting with the two major plotlines going on in this show.
Yamada Takayuki plays Aoshima Wataru, who is a geek who spends most of his time in front of a computer (typecast much?). But wait! He has big hair! And as you know, every big-haired character must have some sort of secret abillity/resource on dramas, and so he has! He makes sketches! He draws stuff! Yay! But seriously folks, he and the last person on this list make up the second major storyline, and his is more intimate (relegated to two people instead of four), but no less wonderful.
Okae Kumiko plays Kouda Orie, an incredibly bored mom looking to have a little fun...and thus goes to a phone dating service...pretending to be a flight attendant. Now, I'm guessing Japan hires supermodels for flight attendants, because the flight attendants I've seen in the US are...well...yeah. Moving on...she and Yamada play off each other really well (despite not actually meeting until much later =P) A well chosen veteran actress to play against one younger than she is ^_^
So overall...this is an amazing show. Everything feels natural, despite the seven-way relationship traffic that goes on during all the episodes. And again, incredible acting from actress Kanno Miho. Definitely a Must-See!
